Spaces of Life: The Art of Sonya Rapoport

The art of Sonya Rapoport has long operated as a bridge between the public sphere of intellectual curiosity and scholarship, and the domestic one of spiritual inquiry and nurturing. Spaces of Life presents a group of Rapoport’s interactive works, created between 1980-2010, that function in the intersection between questioning and inviting.

Parson's new Master's program

New Program will Focus on the Role of Design Thinking in Shaping the New Economy
Parsons The New School for Design has announced a new Master of Science in Strategic Design and Management, which will launch in fall 2012. The program aims to bring together a diverse group of students aspiring to leadership roles in emerging fields: business professionals wishing to complement their expertise with design capabilities; design practitioners seeking business skills and leadership training; and entrepreneurs interested in developing new service models for the evolving economy.
Join our Webinar on Monday, December 12, 2011 to learn more about the MS in Strategic Design and Management program.

"The global economy is undergoing a period of massive, rapid change, and requires new approaches to business innovation," said Parsons Executive Dean Joel Towers. "The Strategic Design and Management program will provide the next generation of business leaders with the tools not only to develop the new products, services, and experiences that will be needed in this new economy, but more importantly, the organizations and systems that will sustain it."

Unlike traditional master's degrees in business management, the MS in Strategic Design and Management incorporates design thinking, service design, and sustainability frameworks. "Traditional business models have been failing us," said program director Jonatan Jelen. "Future business leaders will be called on to rethink the organizational paradigm altogether. They will have to create and implement new types of relationships, networks, and organizational structures."

Students will be exposed to sophisticated real-world perspectives on operations, sustainability, management, leadership, entrepreneurship, design innovation, and design research. A 36-credit program, Strategic Design and Management combines online coursework in business, management, and leadership with design-centered studios that take place on the Parsons campus.
The program features hands-on prototyping of business models to prepare graduates to conceptualize and create new environments for future business activity. In their first year of study, students will address the "meta" environment: researching, analyzing, and interpreting the new rules and laws of the information economy. In year two, students will focus on the main actor of the new economy: new forms of business organization. They will consider how to design not only the appropriate scale, scope, strategy, and structure for an organization, but also its social position. Students will develop comprehensive briefs, work in teams on field research, and present their findings and proposals to colleagues, design professionals, an
d other stakeholders.

The MS in Strategic Design and Management is housed in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons, which encompasses innovative programs that apply design thinking to study the intersection of cities, services, and ecosystems. Other programs in the school include an MFA in Transdisciplinary Design, BBA in Design and Management, BS in Environmental Studies, BFA in Integrated Design, and—also launching in fall 2012—an MA in Theories of Urban Practice and an MS in Design and Urban Ecologies.
Part of the MS curriculum is available as an 18-credit online Graduate Certificate in Design Business. Students must complete six strategic design management, leadership, and innovation courses to qualify for the certificate.

Join our Webinar on Monday, December 12, 2011 to learn more about the MS in Strategic Design and Management program.

Parsons The New School for Design is one of the leading institutions for art and design education in the world. Based in New York but active around the world, the school offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the full spectrum of design disciplines. New technologies

"There has never been a show like “World of Color,” the mega-scale, after-dark celebration of Disney storytelling.  “World of Color” brings animation to life with powerful fountains that become stars of the show as they create one of the world’s largest projected water screens.
The sweeping story and stunning effects are created with:
  • Nearly 1,200 powerful and programmable fountains with heights ranging from 30 feet to 200 feet (50 feet higher than Mickey’s Fun Wheel). Each fountain has multiple points of control to direct the lighting, color intensity, water angle and height.
  • One of the world’s largest projected water screens – a wall of water 380 feet wide by 50 feet high, for a projection surface of 19,000 square feet.
  • Nearly 30 high-definition projectors – 14 of them submersible.
  • Synchronized flame projections, lasers and special effects that will flood the senses.
  • A soundtrack performed by more than 100 musicians.
“World of Color” has been some five years in the making, beginning with brainstorming by show director Davison and his creative crew.  As the concept grew, the Disney team sought out new technologies and multi-media to support a vision in which water and light could dance, change character and move the audience, becoming, in effect, the “stars” of the show."

Augmented Reality

Different forms of augmented reality.  The use in education is interesting, as well as the use of story telling.  However the interest i have is the ability to make the objects interactive. If we could for instance place a soccer field down with a ball and 2 goals and play finger soccer and when done just fold the board and go about your buisness!

Whats going on in CIA 511

LAYAR

Placing augmented reality into your hands!
If you are new to CIA you may not know what augmented reality is, so this should be a little insight into the topic.

Currently we are tasked to place objects around campus into Layar! If your are interested download Layar onto your smart phone and take a look around campus and see what you find!

Making Animation "Reality"

This is something that i absolutely love.  It takes my favorite movie as a kid and makes it become alive.  The combination of engineering and animation come together to make a new form to express ones self.
Please feel free to post things that are related to are and interest you!

What is Destructables.org:

A user generated, Do-It-Yourself website for projects of protest and creative dissent.

Hello friends,

Please join me for the Destructables.org launch party. Several years in the making, now open for business.

The launch will feature several demos, including 'how to make and use wheat paste to put up posters', a demo from the Center for Tactical Magic, and more!

Destructables is a sort of online anarchist cookbook without the weapons and with a lot more art and humor. The site features user-generated, step-by-step instructions for performing a wide range of public actions, such as: shop-dropping (putting fake products in stores), protest strategies, wheat-pasting, making protest props, interventions, methods of civil disobedience, and many other forms of dissent. The projects range from the practical and tactical to the creative and illegal. We wanted to put these tools and resources into one convenient place. To make a living archive and resource for the art and activist communities where people can share what they’ve learned. The site already includes contributions from high profile groups the Yes Men, Crimethinc, and the Center for Tactical Magic.

Destructables.org was made possible through the generous support of Southern Exposure, Di Rosa and through tactical support from Crimethinc, and the Center for Creative Activism. Thanks to the Studio for Urban Projects

From the site:
"There's a movement growing across this country. Thousands of people are saying that they've had enough of Wall St, DC, and an economy that only works for 1% of us.

To support and expand this movement, we're organizing a last minute hackathon. Our goal is to get a room full of programmers, designers, artists and anyone else who's interested, all working on hacks and tools to make the movement stronger.

We'll kick things off Friday night with some overviews of whats happening and form teams. We'll finish Saturday evening with presentations."
