Art Instructor

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The OMI/Excelsior Beacon center is a community center housed within a public school dedicated to improving the lives of youth and adults by providing educational, recreational, and supportive services. The Beacon Center is located in the James Denman Middle School and is a program of the Urban Services YMCA which is the social services branch of the YMCA of San Francisco.

Position:         Art Instructor

     Reports To:    Associate Director & Evening Community Programs Coordinator

Status:            Part-time (2-3 hrs/week)

                       $18-$25 / hour depending on experience

Job Summary: The Art Instructor will teach a weekly Art Class to adults in a community center setting between the hours of 6:30-9:00pm.

Duties:

• Design, outreach, and implement an Art Class for adults and youth that include a planned curriculum.
• Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students.  
• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning by maintaining a safe and positive environment for all.
• Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
• Provide strong leadership in supervising diverse populations of participants.
• Perform evaluations of program as requested.
• Develop outreach and marketing strategies to recruit community members for program as needed.
• Maintain a working budget for your programs and adhere to the accounting systems of the Beacon.  
• Maintain, monitor and purchase supplies and other instructional materials
• Submit, in a professional and timely manner, Beacon forms including; incident reports, time-cards, witness reports, budgets, etc.
• Work to carry out the mission of the OMI/E Beacon, work in a professional manner, practice values-based decision-making, and act as a positive role model for participants.
• Be able to substitute other classes when needed.  
• Maintain minimum attendance of 12 students.

      Qualifications:

1. Knowledge and experience teaching an art class such as introduction to art/drawing, intermediate art/drawing, 3D art, figure drawing, sculpture art, basic design, illustration drawing or painting.
2. Must have experience working with charcoal, oil pastels, watercolors, colored pencils, graphic pens, and acrylic paint mediums.
3. Established record of professional exhibitions and/or published work.
4. Ability to interact with diverse groups of constituents and have ample knowledge of cultural norms of adults and families living in urban communities.
5. Possess strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. And ability to model professionalism, personal responsibility, a strong work ethic and positive character.
6. Experience in classroom and behavior management.
7. Ability to pass TB health clearance and fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice/FBI.
8. Degree in Art preferred, high school diploma required.
9. Bilingual in Cantonese, Spanish, or Tagalog strongly preferred.
10. Ability to work 6PM-9PM schedule.
